The Voice of the Plantation People Organization (VOPP) is committed to promoting and protecting the rights of the Malaiyaha (Plantation) community. While VOPP is not a welfare-based organization, it recognizes its humanitarian responsibility to respond to urgent and critical needs faced by vulnerable families when circumstances demand immediate support.
In this spirit, on 18th July 2026, VOPP distributed roofing sheets to several families living in severely dilapidated line houses in the kithulena Division of Talangaha estate, enabling them to carry out essential repairs and improve the safety of their homes.
During the event, community members were reminded that VOPP’s core mission is not to function as a welfare organization. instead, the organization is dedicated to building a strong and united people’s movement that advocates for the land, housing, and other fundamental rights of the Malaiyaha community. it was emphasized that the assistance provided on this occasion was a humanitarian response to an urgent need and should not be viewed as a substitute for the long-term struggle to secure people’s rights and dignity.
The event was attended by Mr. Anthony Jesudasan, executive Director of VOPP; Ms. Lavina Hasanthi, Programme Head, Ms. k. Harshani, District Coordinator, Mr. Dilan, Chairperson of the District Committee, Mrs. Jeymary, Secretary of the District Committee, Mrs. Jenita, the Chairperson of the Imayam District Malaiyaha Women’s Federation, Mr. Sivabalan, treasurer of the District Committee, Mr. Prasad, volunteer; together with members of VOPP and representatives of the local community.
Through initiatives such as this, VOPP continues to stand in solidarity with the Malaiyaha community responding to immediate humanitarian needs while steadfastly advancing the long-term struggle for justice, equality, and the realization of fundamental human rights.
