The Voice of the Plantation People Organization conducted an Interfaith Harmony Workshop for Malaiyaha Hindu and Christian (Catholic and Christian) Sunday school students in the Galle District on 31st January 2026.
A total of 45 students from different Sunday schools participated in the programme. Many of the children attended the workshop wearing their traditional cultural attire, reflecting the cultural richness of the Malaiyaha community.
The programme commenced with an opening session conducted by Mr. R. Kavishka, Volunteer of VOPP in the Galle District. This was followed by a welcome address by Ms. Lavina Hasanthi, Program Director, who introduced the organization and clearly explained the objectives of the workshop.
In keeping with tradition and interfaith values, the students observed Hindu and Christian prayers and ceremonially lit the oil lamp, symbolizing unity, peace, and mutual respect among different religious communities.
The main objective of the workshop was to promote interfaith harmony and unity among Malaiyaha Hindu and Christian children, who represent the future of the Malaiyaha community. The programme aimed to strengthen mutual understanding, encourage cooperation, and inspire children to work together to overcome common challenges faced by their communities.
The training sessions were facilitated by Mr. Anthony Jesudasan, Executive Director, with the valuable participation of Mr. Rajendran, Principal of GA/Saraswathi Tamil Maha Vidyalaya, Thalanga. Through interactive discussions and activities, the children learned about the importance of unity, peaceful coexistence, and their responsibility as Sunday school students in fostering harmony.
Teachers from Hindu and Christian Sunday schools, along with volunteers, extended their full cooperation to ensure the successful implementation of the programme.
The Interfaith Harmony Workshop in the Galle District provided a meaningful space for Malaiyaha children from different religious backgrounds to interact, learn, and build mutual respect. The programme contributed to strengthening unity and promoting long-term peace and harmony within the Malaiyaha community.
