Workshop on Interfaith Harmony for Hindus and Christian students……

The Voice of the Plantation People Organization (VOPP) is implementing a project in collaboration with Prathiba Media Network and the HNRDF Organization, with the support of VRIDDHI. Through this project, VOPP conducted a training workshop on interfaith harmony for Malaiyaha Hindu and Christian (Catholic and Christian) Sunday school children in the Matara District. The workshop was held on 20 December 2025 at a private hotel in Deniyaya.
A total of 46 children, representing various regions and Sunday schools, participated in the training. The programme commenced in accordance with tradition by lighting the coconut oil lamp, followed by religious observances of Hinduism and Christianity and blessings from religious leaders. A special address was delivered by Mr. Udayakumar, President of the Southern Province Hindu Sunday School Association.
The primary objective of the workshop was to promote unity among Hindu and Christian children, who will shape the future of the Malaiyaha community, and to provide them with knowledge on how to work collectively to bring positive change and overcome the challenges they face. The workshop also aimed to strengthen mutual understanding and create an environment that encourages cooperation and joint action.
Through interactive activities, the resource persons facilitated discussions on why interfaith harmony is essential for the Malaiyaha community, the importance of unity between Hindu and Christian communities living together, the positive impacts of such unity, and the responsibilities of Sunday school children in fostering harmony. The participating children took part enthusiastically and actively throughout the sessions.
The workshop was facilitated by Mr. Mookaiya Vishwanathan (Social Activist) and Mr. Anthony Jesudasan (Executive Director). Strong support was provided by Ms. Lavina Hasanthi, Program Director; Mr. Fransis Rajan, National Program Coordinator; and Mr. Anton Wanaththaiya, Field Manager, of the Voice of the Plantation People Organization. In addition, teachers from the Hindu Sunday schools and VOPP volunteers Ms. Malar and Ms. Vinoda extended valuable cooperation to ensure the success of the programme.
