The Civil Society Collective for Malaiyaha Reconstruction organized a Thai Pongal event under the theme “Pongal for Rights” on 15 January 2026 in Colombo, highlighting the long-standing demands of the Malaiyaha people for individual housing, secure land ownership, and the establishment of new villages.
The event aimed to raise public awareness about the land and housing rights of the Malaiyaha community, the hardships faced by the community in the aftermath of the Ditva cyclone, and the urgent need for permanent and sustainable solutions. It also served as a platform to present clear and collective demands to the government.
The program was attended by religious leaders, representatives of civil society organizations, well-wishers, and media personnel. On this occasion, Pongal (milk rice) was prepared and shared collectively among all participants, symbolizing unity, solidarity, and shared struggle.
The Co-Conveners of the Collective—Mr. Veerasingam, Mr. Anthony Jesudasan, Ms. Kamaleswari, Mr. Jeevarathnam Suresh, and Attorney-at-Law Gauthaman Balachandran—delivered speeches outlining the objectives of the initiative and its key demands. The vote of thanks was delivered by Ms. Lavina Hasanthi, and participants also actively shared their views and reflections during the event. The Voice of the Plantation People Organization (VOPP) is not only an event organizer but a main organization and a key pillar of the Civil Society Collective for Malaiyaha Reconstruction, playing a leading role in shaping its vision, coordination, and advocacy efforts.
