Launches Landmark Research Report on the Rights of the Southern Malaiyaha Community.

The Voice of the Plantation People Organization (VOPP) proudly launched its groundbreaking Research Report on the Social, Economic, Cultural, and Political Rights of the Southern Malaiyaha Community of Sri Lanka at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute (SLFI) in Colombo. This significant report focuses on the lived realities of the Malaiyaha Tamil communities in the Southern Province, particularly in the districts of Matara and Galle.

Led by renowned political economist Dr. Ahilan Kadirgamar and supported by the Young Researchers’ Network (YRN), the report offers a critical analysis of the challenges and systemic barriers faced by Southern Malaiyaha people, while also amplifying their voices and aspirations for dignity, equality, and recognition. It was launched in Tamil, Sinhala, and English, ensuring accessibility to a broad audience and encouraging inclusive national dialogue.

The launch brought together nearly 190 participants, including:

  • Rt. Rev. Dr. Raman Wikramasinghe, Bishop of Galle Diocese

  • Venerable Panakaduwe Ñaṇakitti Thero, Kavyashrī, Kavya Vishārada, Resident Monk of Abesekararama Temple, Negombo

  • Kurukkal (Swami) from Colombo

  • Most Rev. Fr. Micheal Rajendran, Vicar General of Galle Diocese

  • Dr. S. Sivaprakasam, Coordinating Secretary of the Deputy Minister of Plantation Infrastructure Development

  • Representatives from the Southern Province Governor’s office, the Australian Embassy, research institutions, funding agencies, civil society organizations, and members of the Malaiyaha community

Also in attendance were representatives of VOPP’s Director Board and Advisory Board, as well as community members from the research locations and representatives from the Up-Country Malaiyaha community—demonstrating the growing recognition of the Southern Malaiyaha community’s long-overdue demands.

This launch marks a vital milestone in the ongoing Malaiyaha 200 campaign and serves as a platform for policy dialogue and concrete action.

Call to Action
We urge policymakers, civil society actors, donors, and the broader public to read the report, engage with its findings, and support efforts to secure justice, dignity, and full citizenship for the Southern Malaiyaha community. Let this be a turning point toward inclusive development and recognition.

Note: The research was made possible with the full financial and consultant support of the Neelan Thiruchelvam Trust (NTT).
