The Malaiyaha community living in Hemmeliya Wilegoda Estate, under the Badddegama Divisional Secretariat in the Galle District, has called this land home for over 80 years, spanning five generations. Once a thriving settlement of more than fifty families, today only nine families — twenty-five individuals including children — remain, holding on to their ancestral land amidst growing uncertainty.
On 13th July, the estate owner issued a directive ordering these families to vacate the land within three months. That period has now ended, leaving the remaining residents in a deeply vulnerable position without alternative housing or land security.
For more than a year, the Voice of the Plantation People Organization (VOPP) has been advocating for the land and housing rights of the Hemmeliya community. VOPP has actively engaged with the Governor of the Southern Province and relevant officials to express the community’s issues and seek a sustainable solution.
As part of these ongoing advocacy efforts, on 12th October 2025, VOPP organized a media visit to Hemmeliya Estate to highlight the struggles and resilience of the residents. Journalists and media representatives interacted directly with the families and witnessed their living conditions and daily challenges. This initiative aimed to bring national attention to the long-standing injustice faced by the Malaiyaha people in the Southern region.
VOPP extends its heartfelt gratitude to all media colleagues who joined hands to amplify the voices of the Hemmeliya community. We also convey our sincere appreciation to Mr. Malinga, Mr. Sadun, and the PARL Network for their financial and moral support, which made this intervention possible.
Through continued advocacy and solidarity, VOPP remains committed to ensuring that the Malaiyaha community of Hemmeliya Estate secures the right to land, dignity, and justice they rightfully deserve.
