The Voice of the Plantation People Organization (VOPP) is taking firm action against attempts by the owners of the Hammeliya private estate in Wilegoda Kanda, within the Baddegama Divisional Secretariat of the Galle District (formerly the Hammeliya Division of Walpita Estate), to evict nine Malaiyaha Tamil families who have lived there for nearly five generations—around 100 years.
On 10.08.2025, VOPP invited human rights activist Ruki Fernando, Attorney-at-Law Suren, and Attorney-at-Law Manushika Kasuni to advise the affected residents on possible legal and human rights actions. During this meeting, the team engaged in discussions with the families, collected documents and relevant information, and provided detailed guidance on how to move forward.
We also appreciate the strong support extended by the Sinhalese community from the nearby village, who participated in the meeting, expressed solidarity, and promised to continue supporting the residents in this struggle. The program was facilitated by Anthony Jesudasan, Executive Director of VOPP, and Program Director Lavina Hasanthi.
VOPP emphasizes that those responsible must take immediate action to ensure justice and protect the rights of the Malaiyaha community.
