On 6th August 2025, the Law and Society Trust (LST) successfully launched its very first Monthly Discussion Series with a session on “Is the Out-Grower Model an Alternative?” presented by Mr. Vijay Madasamy at the LST Library.
The presentation and discussion centered on key issues related to the out-grower model in plantations, with a particular focus on:
- Land rights
- Labour rights
- Gender concerns
- Social protection of workers
Participants also raised concerns about modern forms of worker exploitation occurring under this scheme, pointing out the lack of proper mechanisms and guidelines to safeguard the rights of plantation communities.
Mr. Anthony Jesudasan, Executive Director of the Voice of the Plantation People (VOPP), shared his insights and experiences on the out-grower system in the Southern Province, enriching the discussion with grassroots perspectives.
This program was organized by LST and forms part of the ongoing collaborative work between LST and VOPP to highlight the challenges and rights of plantation workers.
