On 23rd June 2025, representatives of the Voice of the Plantation People Organization (VOPP) met with the Government Agents (District Secretaries) of Galle and Matara to hand over the survey report on the social, economic, cultural, and political conditions of the Malaiyaha Tamil people in the Southern Province. This report had been previously released by the organization as part of its ongoing advocacy for the rights of the Malaiyaha community.
During the meetings, in-depth discussions were held on the key challenges faced by the Malaiyaha Tamil community, with a particular focus on:

Land ownership and housing rights

Education issues affecting Southern Malaiyaha Tamil schools

Vocational training gaps and opportunities

Other fundamental concerns of the community
The VOPP team emphasized the urgent need for government attention and collaborative solutions to address these long-standing issues, which directly affect the dignity, development, and future of the Malaiyaha people in the Southern districts.
For many grassroots community leaders of VOPP, this was the first time they had the opportunity to meet with Government Agents. They expressed that it was a valuable and fortunate moment to be able to speak directly with high-level officials about their community’s struggles and priorities.
Lavina Hasanthi, Program Director of VOPP, noted:
“This report reflects the real voices of the Malaiyaha community. By engaging with government authorities, we hope to ensure that their issues—particularly land, housing, and education—are recognized and addressed with urgency.”
Anton Wanaththaiya, Field Manager of VOPP, added:
“The challenges faced by Malaiyaha youth and families cannot be ignored any longer. Our focus is on practical solutions, including access to vocational training, which will help uplift the next generation.”
