VOPP Meets Prime Minister to Address Key Issues Facing the Malaiyaha Community

An important meeting was held on January 16, 2025, at the Prime Minister’s Secretariat, bringing together the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, the staff of the Voice of the Plantation People Organization (VOPP), and representatives from the Malaiyaha community in the Galle, Matara, and Kalutara districts. Participants included members of VOPP’s District Committees and General Body.

During the meeting, the VOPP delegation briefed the Prime Minister on the fundamental rights issues affecting the Malaiyaha community living in the Southern and Western Provinces. The discussion focused on critical concerns such as land and housing, access to education, and the hardships faced by families residing on private tea estates. A document outlining proposed solutions and recommendations was formally handed over to the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister expressed a strong commitment to addressing these challenges, prioritizing education-related issues for immediate attention and assuring that discussions would be held with relevant authorities to resolve land and housing matters. The meeting concluded on a positive note, with all participants being warmly received and encouraged to continue their advocacy for the advancement and well-being of the Malaiyaha community.
